Redefining Fitness For All Abilities

Providing Personal Training for Individuals with Specific Needs

Our trainers provide one-on-one or small group fitness training for individuals with specific needs.

Our programs are individually tailored to meet specific needs in order to help clients progress towards and meet their goals!

BENEFITS

Exercise can have tremendous life benefits. Not only does exercise decrease the risk of obesity and associated health risks, it also enhances quality of life by improving overall fitness, motor function, behavior, mindset, mood, cognition, and socialization.

Physical activity promotes and supports neurogenesis within the brain. Brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is crucial to the maintenance, growth, and plasticity (ability to change) of neurons. Regular physical activity promotes significant increases of BDNF, expands complexity of dendrites, and ultimately increases opportunity for neurogenesis.

Physical activity combined with cognitive exercise creates an effective opportunity for neurogenesis through synaptic plasticity, as well as increases in hippocampal size correlated with improved spatial memory. (Phillips, Christy. Neural Plasticity. Hindawi, Volume 2017, Article ID 3589271.)

“New research and anecdotal evidence suggest that some alternative therapeutic choices that include sports, exercise, and other physical activities can be a useful adjunct to traditional behavioral interventions, leading to improvement in symptoms, behaviors, and quality of life for individuals with autism.” (Autism Speaks)

“Dozens of small studies suggest that, aside from boosting motor skills, movement-based therapies may improve social communication, attention, behavioral issues and performance on academic tasks.” (Spectrum News)

Who We Serve

The special needs community is an underserved population within the fitness industry. We aspire to bridge that gap by providing adaptable, comprehensive fitness training that meets each clients’ individual needs.

We offer individualized personal training services for both children and adults with special needs.

These special needs diagnosis include but are not limited to:

ADHD, Alzheimer’s Disease, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Cerebral Palsy, Cognitive and Developmental Delays, Deafness, Diabetes, Down Syndrome, Fragile X Syndrome, Hearing Impaired, Learning Disabilities, Orthopedic Impairment, Parkinson’s Disease. Social and Emotional Disabilities, Speech, Language, or Processing Disorders, Traumatic Brain Injury, Visual Impairment

What We Do

We implement many types of fitness training including CrossFit, Metabolic Conditioning, High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT), strength training, gymnastics, yoga, and more!

We work to engage the athlete physically, mentally, cognitively, socially, and emotionally. This approach is transferable to other aspects of life outside of the training setting, allowing the athlete to progress towards his/her individualized life goals.

We work with athletes of all levels and abilities, creating a unique plan that fits!

Prior to the initial training session, we will begin with a free 30 minute consultation meeting with the athlete and guardian(s) to discuss goals, preferences, strengths, weaknesses, and potential obstacles. From there, we will create a plan tailored to progressing towards the set goals. Finally, we will meet with the client either individually, or in a small group setting (2-3 clients on a case-by-case basis), to train and work towards those goals.

Our Team

Kayla Lawson

Kayla graduated from Clemson University in 2013 with a degree in Special Education. Soon after, she began working with a personal trainer and discovered her love of fitness. In 2014, Kayla became a certified personal trainer through NSCA. While teaching, Kayla recognized a need within the special education community – a lack of adaptable fitness and athletics geared towards individuals with disabilities. Although she enjoyed her time teaching, Kayla knew she wanted to find a way to merge the two sectors and provide this unique service to an underserved population! She went on to get her Crossfit Level 1 certification, took the Crossfit Adaptive Training Course, and began coaching and training at her local Crossfit box, where she was able to grow in her knowledge of health, fitness, and training. Kayla plans to combine her knowledge in the field of special education, her experience teaching, and her love of training to help redefine fitness for all abilities!

Certifications: NSCA-CPT, CPR/AED, CF-L1, Autism Fitness, Crossroads Adaptive Alliance
